This I Believe Essay

  • Essay: a good, solid draft by February 26 for meeting with Troy
  • Podcast: record over spring break and post to your wiki page by class time on March 12th

Following the model of NPR's "This I Believe" essays, as well as their essay guidelines, you will create your own TIB essay about one of your writing territories. We will also be exploring the opinion/argument standards from the Common Core and integrating those elements into the criteria for evaluation, which we will determine together.

Remember -- "to essay" means to make an attempt, to test, to try, to practice. So, feel free to take a risk with your writing and see where your This I Believe essay can take you!

Evaluation Criteria:


5th Grade Opinion Writing from the CCSS
  • CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.5.1 Write opinion pieces on topics or texts, supporting a point of view with reasons and information.
    • CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.5.1a Introduce a topic or text clearly, state an opinion, and create an organizational structure in which ideas are logically grouped to support the writer’s purpose.
    • CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.5.1b Provide logically ordered reasons that are supported by facts and details.
    • CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.5.1c Link opinion and reasons using words, phrases, and clauses (e.g., consequently, specifically).
    • CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.5.1d Provide a concluding statement or section related to the opinion presented.
