The book And To Think That I Saw It On Mulberry Street, by Dr. Seuss, is a great book to have as a mentor text in my classroom for young writers because it has potential for many different craft mini lessons. I also fell in love with this book when I was a student and would love to share the experience with my students. I choose two main themes to make two mini lessons, these themes are repetition and rhyme. This book demonstrates a great amount of repetition that the class could get involved with. It also has rhyming on every page. When I have my students read like writers, this book makes it easy for them to pick up on these things and learn and expand with the topics of repetition and rhyming. These are fun and interesting topics for young writers to learn from.


Mini Lesson #1: Repetition


"A gold and blue chariot's something to meet,
Rumbling like thunder down Mulberry Street!
No, it won't do at all..
A zebra's too small.
A reindeer is better;
He's fast and he's fleet,
And he's look mighty smart
On old Mulberry Street." (pg. 6-9)


I like this particular element of author's craft because it will help students realize the focus of the/a book. I would have students use this in their writing when they are writing about a specific topic. I would explain to them that be using repetition about their main subject, they will be drawing their readers attention back to their topic.


Mini Lesson #2: Rhyme


"I'll pick one with plenty of power and size,
A blue one with plenty of fun in his eyes.
And then, just to give him a little more tone,
Have a Rajah, with rubies, perched high on a throne." (pg. 13).

I like this particular element of author's craft because it is fun and enjoyable for students to learn. I will have students notice the endings of words and try to create their own rhymes in their own writing. This will also help students develop patterns in their writing as they will have patterns of rhyming in their lines of their story.


Writing Assignment

A writing assignment that I would have done in my classroom during writing workshop after the students have finished reading And To Think That I Saw It On Mulberry Street by Dr. Seuss, would be to have the students create their own small book. They would be asked to pick their favorite holiday and that will be their main topic. The students will write about this holiday, using repetition similar to what they have observed from the book. Their short stories will be asked to also include rhyming. The students rhyming will have to stay on a specific pattern that they choose. Such as every other line rhyming or the end of each line rhyming. The students will have to pay close attention as they will be asked to create their short story and proceed to use rhyming and repetition.

Mode (Genre)
This assignment is a narrative writing assignment. The specific sub-genres in this assignment are rhyming and repetition.
Media
This is a paper based assignment. Students will be writing their own story on paper.
Audience
Family at home will see this writing as it will be sent home in their take home folders.
Purpose
Beyond meeting school objectives, the broader goal for students in this piece of writing is to explore and understand the different sub-genres of repetition and rhyming. Students will learn how to recognize these sub-genres is other mentor texts and learn to use them in their own short stories. Students will learn that they are capable of creating stories similar to the mentor texts read in class.
Situation
This assignment will take one full week for students to complete. I will offer the students my help with their stories by walking around and doing assessment throughout their writing time by conferencing with the students individually. The students will be writing their stories on their own.
Assessment
I plan on using the students finished short stories to evaluate this assignment. They will have a full week to create their short stories and include rhyming and repetition, which they will be assessed on in their work. It is important for students to learn how to recognize and create rhyming and repetition in their short stories as well as in mentor texts.

The assignment will start by me reading the students And To Think That I Saw It On Mulberry Street by Dr. Seuss. As a class we will discuss what repetition and rhyming are. We will then identify the sub-genres in the mentor text. After students have an understanding of repetition and rhyming in a mentor text, they will be asked to create their own short stories about their favorite holiday. They will include repetition about the holiday they have chosen and choose a pattern of rhyming to use throughout their story. Students will have a week to create and edit their stories while having access to me (the teacher) to make sure they are on the right track. Once the short stories are complete, they will be assessed on their ability to use repetition and rhyming.
